Room modes in acoustic design

Room Modes

Standing waves are a permanent fixture of all rooms, especially small rooms like the ones we use for mixing and mastering music.

Yes, they are problematic in some ways, but they can also be extremely helpful and beneficial. I'll explain.

If you are building a room from scratch, you should have calculated the best dimensions based on a good RMC. (Hint: never use the misleading online Room Mode Calculators)

Jeff Szymanski started the one I use Twenty years ago, and I have continually updated it for my personal use. You guys get the benefits by downloading it from my resources page.

Okay, so room modes are a static reality. Individually they are static but in general, they are everywhere, depending on the frequency. Let's look at them as helpers! They support the music at these positions. Let's make sure they are controlled so that we have uniform support across the audible spectrum.

When modal damping is optimal, the support is smooth throughout the room! e validate it with room measurements using a calibrated mic and software like REW. I use EASERA.

The decay targets are based on your room criteria. Much of my room criteria is IN my RMC.

Use it! Don't fight it because... Resistance is Futile. 😁 You can even build the BORG desk! 😂

The trick is having the right dimensions where the Modal Distribution is spread evenly and the room passes the Bonello Distribution Criteria.

Use software and a calibrated mic like the UMIK-1 (from minidsp) with Room EQ Wizard. Measure the empty room. Measure from various positions. Check the RMC and see if it aligns with the calculated response.

This will give you a foundation to start from.
